May is Ultraviolet Awareness Month

Prevent Blindness America has declared May as UV awareness month.  We have been educated on the importance of sunscreen and proper attire to protect our skin from UV exposure.  We can’t forget to protect our eyes, especially the eyes of children 18 and under.

According to the World Health Organization, most of the exposure to UV during a lifetime occurs before the age of 18.  Children spend more time outdoors than adults and are at greater risk of UV exposure and UV damage.   UV damage builds over time and has been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems.

Protect your eyes by:

  1. Wearing your sunglasses, along with a wide brimmed hat, if possible.
  2. Buy Sunglasses that block 99-100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) and Drs. North & Watson, Optometrists, P.A. recommends annual eye examinations to monitor changes in vision and eye health.
